Abstract

1422735 D T A apparatus COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 16 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18320/73 Heading G1N Apparatus for carrying out differential thermal analysis (DTA) at temperatures above 1000‹C comprising two refractory oxide crucibles e.g. beryllia, 1, 2 for the study and reference samples respectively, each crucible resting on an alumina stand or holder 3, 4 respectively, these being a disc 10, 11 of niobium or rhenium diposed in the heat path from each crucible to its stand with respective faces of the disc contacting the crucible and the stand, and thermocouples AB, CD connected in opposition each thermocouple having its hot junction secured by a non-welded connection to that surface of a respective disc which contacts the stand. The hot junction is crimped in a hollow, cylindrical projection 12, 13 of respective discs and the thermocouples are of tungsten alloyed with 5% rhenium (arms A, C) and with 26% rhenium (arms B, D). Alternatively the thermocouples may be of platinum (arms A, C) and platinum-10% rhodium (arms B, D). As in Figure 1 the disc and crucible fit into the stand but in an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), each disc fits into a recess in the bottom of a respective crucible. The rate of temperature change is adjustable between 50‹C and 300‹C per hour.
