Abstract

1422788 Destructible core MONSANTO Ltd 11 May 1973 [8 June 1972] 26737/72 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions C3 and C4-C5] A void is formed in concrete by forming a member in the shape of the desired void by (a) moulding a composition comprising a wax and particles of a foamed polymer (b) cutting a mass consisting of the said composition or (c) coating a pre-formed void forming member with the composition, placing concrete around the member, allowing the concrete to set. The composition is subsequently removed. Examples are given in which (1) a hot mixture of expanded polystyrene granules and paraffin wax was allowed to cool in a wooden block mould, liquid concrete was poured over and around the resulting polymer/wax block and allowed to cure and hot water was used to remove the block from the concrete by melting the wax and allowing it and the granules to float out; (2) the process of (1) repeated, except that the mould in which the polymer/wax block is formed was lined with hardboard, yielding a composite block and hence a concrete block with a hardboard layer; (3) a block of foamed polystyrene was coated with the said polymer/ wax composition, and used to form a void in a concrete member as in (1), by melting the wax of the coating layer after the concrete had set, thus removing the coating layer and allowing removal of the polystyrene block. Other foamed polymers are described, e.g. polyethylene.
