Abstract
1422438 Fire-fighting composition PHILADELPHIA SUBURBAN CORP 16 Nov 1973 [17 Nov 1972] 53369/73 Heading ASA An aqueous pumpable concentrate for dilution with at least about ten times its volume of water and foaming with air to produce a fire-fighting foam, comprises (a) a water-soluble thixotropic polysaccharide in an amount to cause the diluted concentrate to gel when applied to non-aqueous polar solvents, and (b) foaming agent for causing the diluted concentrate to form a foam having an expansion of at least about 3. Polysaccharides having at least 100 glucose units, or a molecular weight of at least about 18000 may be used e.g. sclerogluten which may be present from 1 to 3% by wt of the concentrate, xanthan gum. The concentrate may contain 25 to 60% by wt. N-methyl pyrrolidone-2, or a solvent a major proportion of which is N-methyl pyrrolidone-2 in which the other components are dissolved. The solvent may also include water and sufficient ethylene glycol to keep the water from freezing at -20‹C, or the concentrate may contain sufficient ethylene glycol or other antifreeze agent to reduce its freezing point to -20‹C or below. The concentrate may contain (1) film-forming material to cause the foam to form an aqueous film over liquid hydrocarbons e.g. a mixture of fluorocarbon and silicone surfactants examples of which are given, that reduces the surface tension of the diluted concentrate to 19 dynes or less cm; (2) a foam-stabilizing hydrophilic resin e.g. a polymeric material having repeating hydrocarbon groups and repeating groups of a halfamide of succinic acid, wherein the hydrocarbon groups are phenyl ethylene groups and the half-amide is the half-amide of 3-dimethylamino propylamine, examples being given. In fighting a fire of burning combustible liquid e.g. a hydrophilic liquid such as ethanol or acetone, an aqueous solution formed by diluting the concentrate with at least about ten times its volume of water is foamed with air and the foam applied to the burning liquid.
