Abstract
1421773 Production of iron oxide LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 48456/72 Heading C1A Magnetic iron oxide is manufactured by treating an aqueous acidic liquor containing ferrous sulphate with lime in the presence of added ammonium or alkali metal cations to produce a precipitate containing hydrated ferrous oxide and CaSO 4 , oxidizing the precipitate until the proportion of ferrous oxide in it is within the range of from 15-30% based on the total weight of iron oxides in the precipitate, and separating the resulting mixture of iron oxides from the CuSO 4 in the oxidized precipitate. It is preferred to carry out the treatment with lime at 10-40‹ C. for 15-30 min. in the presence of from 2-20% of NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 or NH 4 Cl, the oxidation being performed after completion of the precipitation by passing iron through the suspension at 80-85‹ C. for a few hours. The product, magnetic iron oxide, is separated from the slurry by magnetic means, dried and sieved and is suitable for use as a pigment.
