Abstract

1421670 Measuring active power; measuring resistance MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 19 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 58766/73 Heading G1U The power dissipated in a system and its effective resistance are measured by multiplying values corresponding to current and voltage integrating the product, periodically sampling the integral and applying it to an indicator or control device and also squaring the voltage or current, storing it over the integration period, sampling the stored value and applying it to a divider whose other input receives the sampled integral. In a spot welding system, the integrator 14, sampling gates 25, 117 and stores 33, 118, 115 are controlled by a single timing control 45. The integration period is chosen to be a few half-cycles of the power supply 142 fed to the welding electrodes 103, 104. The integrator is reset after each specified period shortly after the gate 25 is opened to set the integral value into store 33 which is erased after a fixed store period less than the integration time. The store output representing power is compared to a reference value 99 and the difference used to control the supply. Divider 122 receives the power signal as one input and a value corresponding to current squared at its other input. The output representing effective weld resistance passes to an indicator 137 and threshold trigger 138 which interrupts the supply if an abnormal resistance value arises.
