Abstract
1421501 Gapping fastener stringers YOSHIDA KOGYO KK 31 July 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 36350/73 Heading E2S A method of forming an element-free gap in continuous sliding clasp fastener opposed stringer tapes T, T', each carrying along their adjacent longitudinal edges a row of fastener elements E whose coupling parts E' are interengaged comprises gripping the stringer tapes at points opposite to the rows of fastener elements, causing the interengaged parts of the fastener elements to pivot on themselves in a direction opposite to each other to spread apart the adjacent tape edges widely enough to expose therebetween said interengaged parts E', and cutting off the thus exposed interengaged parts along a length corresponding to a desired gap to be formed. An apparatus 10 for carrying out the method camprises a vertically reciprocable ram 11 which carries a block 12 with a punch 18 and a pair of spring-loadedgripping arms 14, 14', and a block 17 which is mounted upon a base 13, has gripping arms 16, 16' adapted to cooperate with the arms 14, 14', and which accommodates die cutting anvil 19 which is movable vertically upwardly, against springs 20, 20', with respect to the block 17 by a horizontally movable-cam plate 25 mounted in the base 13. The anvil has inclined top surfaces 21, 21', an element receiving recess 22, and a punch receiving opening 23 with upper cutting edges 24, 24' which coact with the punch 18. With the fastener placed in position as shown in Fig. 2 the ram 11 is lowered to clamp the tapes T, T' between the gripping arms 16, 21, and 16', 21'. The cam block 25 is then moved to the left to raise the anvil 19 the interengaged parts E', Fig. 4, pivoting away from each other and the tapes T, T' being deflected upwardly along the surfaces 21, 21' and spread apart. The punch 18 then descends into the opening 23, Fig. 5 to sever the interengaged parts E' corresponding to the desired length of gap required.
