Abstract
1421379 Protection against missiles BOLKOW GmbH and R F THOMANEK 3 Nov 1965 [11 Dec 1964] 46640/65 Heading F3A Protection against missiles is afforded by an array 12, Fig. 1, of explosive charges which is detonated automatically so as to destroy or deflect a missile. The charges, which are hollow and therefore directive, are laid in a matrix over the surface to be protected and are mounted to direct their force towards the missile and away from the surface. The missile 16 is detected by one or more receivers 14 towards which light (visible or invisible) rays are sent by sources 14. To avoid unwanted charge detonation it may be arranged that only a ray-intercepting object above a predetermined speed effects detonation. An explosive charge Fig. 3 may consist of an explosive 31, lining 32 and detonator 33 in a casing 34 comprising a thin sheath 35 for weather protection and a thick casing 36 not disrupted when the charge is detonated. A matrix form of charges is described Fig. 2 (not shown) for a small object to be protected. The application of the invention to the protection of armoured fighting vehicles, ships &c. is described Figs. 4 to 10 (not shown). In the light ray system the components may be protected against damage, the light rays being deflexed along the necessary paths by prisms or mirrors, Fig. 11 (not shown).
