Abstract

1420600 Axial-flow compressors DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 23 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972 5 Jan 1973] 8278/72 and 726/73 Heading F1C A compressor comprises a rotor 1 having at least one peripheral row of rotor blades 3, a upstream row of stator blades 5 and a downstream row of stator blades 6, partition 12, 24 in the respective stator blade rows, each partition occupying at least the whole of one stator blade pitch, the partitions dividing the total annular flow passage through the rotor into successively arranged arcuate segmented flow paths 13-19 through the rotor blades, and a confined flow path from an inlet 20 to an outlet 25 intersecting the row of rotor blades from the upstream side to the downstream side at each of the flow paths 13-19 in turn. Each partition 24 extends from the row of stator blades 6 into a toroidal space 9 to occupy the full radial height between an inner ring 7 and an outer casing 8, and within the space 9 is orientated in a different direction as shown so as to join the next following partition 12 which is similarly extended from the row of stator blades 5 into the space 9. The partitions 12, 24 thereby define return flow paths 32-37 each of which extends from the downstream end of one of the arcuate segmented flow paths 13-18 to the upstream end of the next following one of the arcuate segmented flow paths 14-19, each flow path belonging to a separate stage of a multi-stage compressor or pump. The flow paths 13-19 are of successively decreasing width, as shown. To reduce leakage between the highest pressure flow path 19 and the lowest pressure flow path 13, the partition 42 between them is wider than the partition 12. Bearing 11 may be a gas bearing. In a modification, Figs. 4, 5, 6 (not shown), each return flow path includes piping containing an intercooler.
