Abstract

1420581 Selective signalling; pattern recognition MARCONI CO Ltd 4 Nov 1974 [8 Feb 1974] 05982/74 Headings G4H and G4R [Also in Division H3] A pressure-sensitive device comprises a sheet of plastics material having a first array of electrical conductors on one large area surface in crossing relationship with a second array of conductors on the other large area surface to provide a plurality of cross-over points, the plastics sheet being electrically poled at least in the regions of the cross-over points whereby pressure applied at a cross-over point provides an electrical signal on at least one of the two conductors crossing at that point. As disclosed, the plastics material is polyvinylidene fluoride. In a first embodiment, pressing a cross-point produces a signal on a row conductor and a column conductor through respective thresholding amplifiers, these signals being encoded. The device may be used to select an item on a computer display, or provide map references. A second embodiment, which can also be used in recognition of signatures or written characters by feeding a computer or display, has the row conductors each made of two dissimilar thin films to provide a diode at each cross-point. The column conductors are scanned by being connected to earth in turn (those not so connected being connected to a negative source to back-bias the diodes), outputs being taken via amplifiers from the row conductors.
