Abstract

1420331 Fluoran compounds for use in pressure-sensitive copying paper WIGGINS TEAPE Ltd 9 Feb 1973 [21 Feb 1972] 7850/72 Heading C4P [Also in Division D2] Novel compounds of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> each independently is H or an optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical or forms part of a heterocyclic ring containing the attached nitrogen atom; R<SP>3</SP> is H, halogen, NO 2 , or optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or amino; X is O or -NR<SP>4</SP>- in which R<SP>4</SP> is H or optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl; ring D is an optionally substituted 5- or 6-membered saturated heterocyclic ring; and ring B optionally carries one or more further substituents; but when X is O and D is an unsubstituted piperidine ring then R<SP>3</SP> is not H), but excluding the compounds claimed in British Specification 1,336,955, are prepared, when X is O, by reacting together compounds of the formulae (wherein R<SP>5</SP> is H or C 1-5 alkyl) in the presence of a condensing agent. The products are converted to the compounds where X is -NR<SP>4</SP>-by reaction with R<SP>4</SP>NH 2 either at elevated temperature and/or pressure or in the presence of a condensing agent. The novel compounds are colourless colour formers which form coloured substances on contact with electron-accepting substances, and have use in pressure-sensitive recording systems.
