Abstract

1420392 Paper adhesives SCHOLTENHONIG RESEARCH BV 28 June 1974 [29 June 1973] 31016/73 Heading C3U An aqueous, film-forming and non-migrating adhesive comprises an aqueous starch suspension in which more than 80 weight per cent of the total starch in the adhesive is in the form of separate fragments from granules crosslinked by bi- or polyfunctional agents containing functional groups which react with at least two available hydroxyl groups of the starch, which have a swelling power of 5-15, the weight average particle size of the swollen fragments being 1-10 micron and less than 15% of the granule fragments are larger than 10 micron. The composition may be obtained by cross-linking starch in granular form with a bi- or polyfunctional reagent and then subjecting the starch granules in the presence of not more than 15-30% moisture to simultaneous heat, pressure and fragmenting action in an extruder; expelling the starch derivative through a die into a region of ambient temperature and pressure thereby effecting a sudden release of steam; milling the puffed wheat product and mixing with hot or cold water to produce the aqueous suspension.
