Abstract

1419962 Free radical reagents for oxidation processes BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 14 March 1973 [5 April 1972] 15592/72 Headings C2C and C2U The invention comprises free radical reagents consisting of a solution of an adduct of a stable tris-phenyl aminium cation radical in which the substituents are electro-negative, and oxygen in a neutral non-hydroxylic solvent. They may be prepared by dissolving a stable trisphenyl aminium salt in a neutral non-hydroxylic solvent in the presence of oxygen. The preferred aminium cation radical is the tris-(pbromophenyl)-cation radical and suitable aminium salts are hexachloroantimonate and tetrafluoroborate of tris - (4 - bromophenyl) - amine. Suitable non-hydroxylic solvents are, hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, acetonitrile or nitromethane. The free radical reagents may be used for oxidation processes, particularly for the oxidation of compounds containing cis-1,3-diene groups. In the examples (a) ergosteryl acetate is reacted with tris-(p-bromophenyl)-aminium fluoroborate and oxygen to give ergosteryl-5,8α- peroxido-3#-acetate and (b) bicyclohexenyl is similarly oxidized to bicyclohexenyl peroxide of formula
