Abstract
1419619 Optical scanning REDIFON Ltd 23 Nov 1972 [25 Jan 1972] 3429/72 Heading H4F An optical scanning system comprises a rotatable mirror drum 10 together with an arc of combinations 15 each of a lens 16 set at substantially its focal distance from the reflecting face of the drum and a roof prism 17 and which serve to receive a light beam 14, 14<SP>1</SP> after reflection at a face of drum 10 and to redirect it as a beam 14<SP>11</SP> to the same face, whereby the final beam 14<SP>111</SP> is deflected in the same sense as, and at four times the angular rate of, the rotation of the drum. In Fig. 1, the beam 14 is at a slight angle to the general plane of the system, and as the beam 14<SP>1</SP> traverses each roof prism it provides a corresponding line scan. The scanning of beam 14<SP>111</SP> is centred about the beam 14 when seen in plan view, but is vertically displaced therefrom. Fig. 2 (not shown) indicates how, by suitably relating the positions of combinations 15 with respect to the angles between adjacent faces on the drum 10, the light loss which would otherwise occur when a corner of drum 10 crosses beam 14 is eliminated. During that period, beam 14 is split into two beams incident on separate combinations 15, but the beams recombine when again incident on the drum corner to form a single scanning beam 14<SP>111</SP>. By this means it is possible to increase the width of beam 14 so that it is equal to, or greater than the width of individual faces of the mirror drum. A similar principle may apply if beam 14 falls on more than one corner of the drum simultaneously. The beam 14 may extend from a light source, e.g. a laser, or extend towards a stationary photodetector. It may be of ultra-violet or infra-red radiation. The system is said to be of use in surface inspection apparatus, for visual displays or video signal generation, and in apparatus for data recording and retrieval. Tracking of moving radiant areas is also mentioned.
