Abstract
1419644 Phototropic glass CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 15 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 23059/73 Heading C1M [Also in Division C4] A phototropic glass (A) suitable as near or reading portion material for fusion with a phototropic distance portion glass (B) to obtain a multi-focal spectacle glass (C), the glass (A) being defined in terms of 100% of a basis glass to which has been added a component (Y) consisting of one or more additives as a percentage of the basis glass (X), the basis glass (X) comprising the following expressed as percentages by weight: 30-55% SiO 2 and/or B 2 O 3 , 0-8% alkali metal oxide(s), 16-54% Al 2 O 3 and/or La 2 O 3 , 0-25% ZnO and/or ZrO 2 and/or TiO 2 , 0-30% PbO, 0-8% alkaline earth metal oxide(s), 0-10% Bi 2 O 3 and/or Ta 2 O 5 and/or Nb 2 O 5 and/or WO 3 , 0-0À1% CuO, 0-0À02% CoO, 0À1-1À8% Ag 2 O; the balance, if any, consisting of one or more compatible constituents, e.g. nickel oxides, other than any of the hereinafter defined additive(s) of component (Y), and the component (Y) consisting of the following expressed as percentages by weight of the basis glass (X): 0À2-4À5% Cl, 0-4% Br and/or I, 0-4% F and 0-2% refining agent(s). Numerous specific examples are disclosed some of which are also characterized by reference to the molar content of the species present. The colour of the phototropic glass may be adapted to match as far as possible the colour in the distance portion glass. Specific coloured glasses disclosed are yellow, grey and brown. A suitable commercial distance portion glass (B) disclosed has the following composition expressed in weight per cent: 53À0% SiO 2 , 8À0% Al 2 O 3 , 15À1% B 2 O 3 , 2À0% Li 2 O, 2À0% K 2 O, 1À0% Na 2 O, 7À0% BaO, 4À0% MgO, 6À0% PbO, 1À0% ZrO 2 , 0À3% AgNo 3 , 1À0% Cl- and 1À0% Bu-.
