Abstract
141,908. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). April 23, 1919. Silicon and boron chlorides and bromides. -Liquid halogen compounds of silicon, boron, and titanium are prepared by reacting upon the element or its carbide with the halogen, heat being abstracted from the reaction zone to prevent the temperature from rising high enough to cause the formation of undesired compounds, such as sub-chlorides. The apparatus described comprises a reaction chamber set in a water jacket 2 on a stand 10. Water enters the jacket at 4 and leaves at 5. To start the reaction, a portion of the material, such as silicon, is heated in a crucible and placed on top of the rest of the material in the chamber 1, the halogen being immediately admitted by a valve 9. The liquid product passes by the connexions shown to a receiver 12, preferably of glass, so that if any brownish solid substance (a sub-chloride of silicon) comes through with the liquid product, the circulation of water in the jacket may be increased to lower the reaction temperature. In the production of titanium chloride, a solid sub-chloride is also liable to be formed.
