Abstract
1418431 Testing fuel oils COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 23 Jan 1974 [24 Jan 1973] 03207/74 Heading G1N The temperature at which viscosity of a fuel oil becomes excessive for practical use in an I.C. engine is determined by measuring the time taken for a measured quantity of the fuel to be drawn up a pipette tube by a pre-set negative pressure. As shown Fig.1, a cylinder 1 is filled with the test oil 17 to the level of a spout 5 and a negative pressure is applied via tube 11 and valves 9, 8 to a pipette 2 which has a lower end inside cylinder 1 and an enlarged middle portion 16 containing two thermocouples 12, 13 connected in opposition, whereby their resultant output voltage is normally zero. When the fuel oil reaches the lower thermocouple junction an output pulse is produced which stops a clock initiated with the negative pressure. If this time interval is less than a predetermined critical value, the fuel 17 is replaced in the cylinder 1 at a lower temperature and the process repeated until the measured time interval exceeds the critical value. The temperature of the oil at which this occurs is recorded. The cyclic testing is automated.
