Abstract

1418482 Measuring speed electrically SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 May 1973 [18 April 1972] 17981/72 Heading G1N The speed of a water craft is measured by a bladed screw 10 which drives, via a flexible member 30, and a rigid tube 60, an electromagnetic generator 22 comprising a permanent magnet rotating with respect to a fixed coil. The frequency of the A.C. is dependent on the screw speed, and this signal is rectified and used to indicate speed. As shown terminals 34 from the generator are U-shaped and have projections 36 which are proud of a tubular casing 17 of the drive. The tube 17 is carried on the craft by clips Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) which carry terminals connected to the indicator, these terminals engaging projections 36 when the tube 17 is pushed fully down. A foam rubber cushion 24 is disposed above the generator, and a handle 50 with water escape holes 24 is provided.
