Abstract

Vices.-To provide for rapid adjustment, the movable jaw of a vice is fitted with a detachable clutch plate embracing the operating spindle and adapted to clutch it by a tilting movement. In Fig. 1, the sliding jaw C is shown fitted with a plate D having an aperture E<1>, preferably with chamfered edges, to embrace, and rest on, the spindle F. Rapid adjustment of the jaw is effected by raising its rear projection C<2> and sliding it up to the work L, and gripping is effected by rotating a handle J<1> on the spindle bearing on a cam H, whereby the tilted jaw C is first pressed down on the bed and the plate D clutched to the spindle, the further movement of the handle serving to grip the work firmly. In a modification, the plate D is carried by a plate spring fixed to the jaw C and normally holding a plate in unclutched position but contacting the spindle, and means, such as an eccentric, are provided to tilt the plate for clutching.
