Abstract

1418044 Matrix displays FUJITSU Ltd 29 Dec 1972 [31 Dec 1971] 60201/72 Heading G5C In a display system comprising a panel having X conductors a, b, c connected sequentially to buses A, B, C, Y conductors covered by a dielectric layer and connected to a data source, a pattern is produced by varying the potential of the buses to produce a lateral discharge between adjacent X conductors and move it across the panel, applying appropriately timed pulses to selected Y conductors to produce vertical discharges between X and Y conductors as the lateral discharge moves across the panel thereby producing stored wall charges on the dielectric layer and applying sustaining pulses to the X and Y conductors which produce discharges only at those intersections with wall charges. The buses A, B, C are connected to drivers 11a, 11b, 11c having positive and negative portions with switches 5a, 5b, 5c which allow negative pulses to be supplied only during writing operations. On receipt of a write signal a one-shot multivibrator 17 supplies a pulse V g to conductor S and pulse trains Vs/2, - Vs/2 to buses A and B. A discharge occurs between conductors S and A and then between A and B. Concurrently data pulses are applied to selected y conductors to produce vertical discharges at e.g. P. The process is repeated by applying the pulse trains to B and C with the polarity reversed. After completion of write in, a sustain voltage is applied by the preset output of flipflop 16 via OR gates 13, 23. The display panel comprises dielectric material over both conductor arrays and uses charge storage in the production of the lateral discharges, however the insulation on the X conductors may be dispensed with. To decrease interference along X electrodes walls, resistive strips or layers of material of low secondary emission may extend along the Y electrodes.
