Abstract

1416881 Tumbler dryers HOTPOINT Ltd 23 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 9523/72 Heading F4G A tumbler dryer comprises a drum 5 provided with a loading opening at one end and mounted for rotation in a cabinet 2 about a horizontal axis. The cabinet 2 has an air inlet 4 associated with a fan 7 for producing a flow of air into the cabinet space and from thence into the drum through apertures 20d in the aforesaid one end of the drum. The other end of the drum is open to the atmosphere through an outlet opening 41a in the adjacent wall of the cabinet. The loading opening and air outlet opening of the drum are coaxial therewith. The drum is rotatably mounted in the cabinet by means of the periphery of the air outlet opening and a cylindrical projection 20c (defining the loading opening) thereof. Bearings and/or bearing strips of felt, P.T.F.E. or a mixture of P.T.F.E. and nylon are provided. An annular felt bearing forms an air seal at the bearing. A door 3 which closes the loading opening is sealed by a flexible sealing device 39. A heater 33 in the form of a pair of turns of nickel/chromium resistance wire wound in open spirel fashion is provided adjacent the apertured end of the drum 5. A filter 25 is provided at the air outlet opening of the drum. The fan 7 comprises an annular inlet plate 50, a back-plate 51 of smaller diameter than the opening of the inlet plate 50 and five blades 52 connecting the plates. The blades 52 are of planar shape, although they may be curved, and are disposed at right-angles to the plates. The blades 52 are, however, inclined backwards at an angle of 70 to 85 degrees to radial planes containing the axis of the fan and the respective inner edges of the blades. The outer ends of the blades are inclined inwards toward the backplate.
