Abstract

1416730 Alkali metal silicate cement USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 27 Dec 1972 [28 Dec 1971] 59658/72 Heading C3N [Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A cement for bonding a ceramic liner in a metal tube consists by weight of 1 to 10% of water-soluble alkali metal silicate mixture having an alkali metal oxide content of 19 to 51% and a silica content of 24 to 80%, the balance being water of crystallization and incidental impurities; and 90 to 99% of an alumina-silica refractory aggregate which has a particle size of minus 20, preferably minus 100, and is selected from calcined clay, raw clay, kyanite, mullite, bauxite, alumina and mixtures thereof, and sufficient water to obtain a trowelable consistency. The alkali metal is preferably sodium in which case the alkali metal silicate mixture has a sodium oxide content of from 22 to 32% and a silica content of from 50 to 60% and from 3 to 6% of this mixture is preferably mixed with said refractory aggregate. Alternatively lithium or potassium silicate may be used.
