1416129 Refuse compactors HOBART CORP 14 June 1974 [14 March 1973] 26577/74 Divided out of 1411289 Heading B8C The subject-matter of this Specification is substantially the same as that described in Figs. 2, 46-48 of Specification 1,411,289 but the claims are concerned with a trash compactor comprising a housing 12 with an open trash receptacle 14, a reciprocable compacting ram 18 movable into, and out of, said receptacle, a reversible electric motor 22 for driving the ram, a driving connection between said motor and said ram and yieldable means co-operating with said driving connection and arranged to permit said motor to commence rotation before the motor exerts a driving force on the ram via the driving connection. After a load is compacted in the receptacle 14 and the motor is stalled there exists a high force between the jack screws 16 and the threaded drive sockets 20 so that a substantial torque is required to rotate the motor in the reverse direction to retract the ram. The spring-loaded mechanism 44, 46, 52, which tensions the drive chain 36, allows the motor 22 to commence rotation in the opposite direction for at least a fraction, e.g. half, of a motor revolution, before a heavy load is encountered the motor first drawing against the slack in the upper chain reach 38, Fig. 2. In this manner an inexpensive motor with a relatively long life can be employed. A system for controlling the starting, stopping, and reversal of the motor is described with reference to Fig. 3, not shown.
