Abstract
1415653 Chromium plating A1 foil for lithographic printing plates J E THORPE 22 March 1973 [6 Jan 1972] 689/72 Heading C7B Aluminium foil having a coating of hydrophilic chromium for use in production of lithographic printing plates is produced by continuous passage of the foil through a series of treatment tanks for cleaning; optionally electrolytically etching and further cleaning with nitric acid; coating with a metal to which the next layer will adhere, e.g. Zu, e.g. deposited from a zinc oxide bath or deposited electrolytically from a cyanide bath; optionally plating with copper e.g. from a pyrophosphate bath, and thereafter electro-plating with hydrophilic chromium. The chromium may be deposited using interrupted D.C. current using a CrO 3 /H 2 SO 4 bath. A layer of light-sensitive material may then be applied. Without the copper layer this acts as the ink receptive layer of the lithographic plate, whilst with the copper layer the photo-resist acts as a stencil for etching the chromium to form a bi-metallic Cr/Cu lithographic plate.
