Abstract

1414460 Matrix displays PLESSEY CO Ltd 2 Feb 1973 [10 March 1972] 11246/72 Heading G5C A display system comprises an opaque screen 1 having a plurality of translucent windows 2 and rotatable shutters 13 operated by magnetic fields, shutters in each being pivoted on a common vertically extending shaft or spindle. The system is operated by a slide 6 comprising electromagnets 7a, 7b ... each aligned with a row of windows and a magnetic, electrostatic or optical detector 8 which senses markers 5 on the screen aligned with columns of windows. (The shutters shown in Fig. 1 are known.) Moving the slide from left to right over the screen with all the electromagnets 6 energized results in all windows being exposed. A pattern is then produced by moving the slide back and energizing selected electromagnets as each marker is reached to move associated shutters. A map may be placed over the screen and the latter used to provide additional information. A transparent layer containing data may be placed over the map, scanned by an array of photocells and the data transferred to the screen.
