Abstract
1413665 Overhead power conductor REYNOLDS METALS CO 20 Nov 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 55171/72 Heading H1A In an overhead power conductor comprising a steel core 12 and an aluminium or aluminium alloy component 14 around the core the aluminium component is at least partially annealed and has a yield strength below 8500 p.s.i. for 0À2 elongation. As shown the aluminium is preferably stranded about the steel core, the aluminium wires being annealed before stranding. The conductor is stressed above its normal working load before or during erection so that the aluminium component is inelastically stretched and so that most or all of the normal load will be borne by the steel core as opposed to prior conductors in which the aluminium component is hard tempered and bears a significant proportion of the tensile load. The conductor is thus less susceptible to creep, say, and loss of strength due to overheating and various modes of vibration. The aluminium preferably has a capacity for ductile inelastic extension of at least 5% in ten inches and a conductivity of at least 61% IACS. The steel core may be galvanized or aluminized and the aluminium component may be in the form of a seamless or welded tube or made up of sector-shaped component or of flat conductors having rounded edges.
