Abstract
1412878 Tobacco substitute TAMAG BASEL AG 28 Feb 1973 [2 March 1972] 9716/73 Heading A2C A process for the manufacture of a tobacco substitute by shaping from a paste and consolidating by drying is characterised in that, in order to manufacture the paste, the following constituents are comminuted, stirred into water and homogenised: firstly, a filler constituent which consists of one or more of bran, chaff and straw of wheat, oats and other gramineous plants, coffee bean shells, coconut shells, coconut fibres, cocoa bean shells and fibres, as well as shells of other types of nuts; secondly, an active substance constituent which consists of at least two of the following components: fruit concentrate, raw molasses, caramel and malt extract, in an amount which suffices, including the contents of all other constituents of the paste, to give a total content, of the total constituents of the paste, of at least 1% by dry weight of amino acids and of at least 5% by dry weight of sugars: thirdly, a nitrogen donor constiutent which consists of at least two of the nitrogen donor components: potassium nitrate, urea (optionally in combined form), diammonium hydrogen phosphate, glycine, betaine, ammonia and other ammonium compounds, in an amount which suffices, including the contents of all other constituents of the paste, to give a total content, of the total constituents of the paste, of at least 3% by dry weight of nitrogen, without taking the amino acids into account; fourthly, a structure forming constituent which consists of one or more of sodium carboxymethylcellulose and other cellulose derivatives and raw pectin; and fifthly, a special active substance constituent which consists of one or more of plasticisers, flavour-improving and odourimproving agents, agents for improving burning characteristics, and dyestuff; the proportions of the constituents being present per 100 parts by dry weight of filler constituent, 10 to 45 parts by dry weight of active substance constituent, 10 to 45 parts by dry weight of nitrogen donor constituent, 10 to 60 parts by dry weight of structure forming constituent and 20 to 90 parts by weight of special active substance constituent. In the examples, the filler ingredients are first dry ground, then suspended in water and wet ground before adding the other ingredients. The resultant paste after kneading is shaped to form a sheet and dried. Ingredients, not particularly specified above but which are included in one or more of the exemplified pastes are: ground nut shells, walnut shells, rice chaff, maize straw, magnesium formate, tartaric acid, vanillin, asbestos, calcium carbonate, liquid paraffin, pectin, glyoxal, glycerine, diethylene glycol, active charcoal, and coffee bean residue.
