Abstract
1411443 Naphthalate polyester fibres TEIJIN Ltd 12 Dec 1972 [13 Dec 1971] 57335/72 Heading B5B A filament, fibre or yarn consisting of a naphthalate polyester containing at least 85 mol. per cent of ethylene-2,6-naphthalate units and having an intrinsic viscosity (in a 6 : 4 mixture of phenol and o-dichlorobenzene at 35‹ C.) of 0À45 to 1À0, has a diffraction intensity ratio (R) between a Bragg reflection angle 20= 18À7 degrees and 20 = 15À6 degrees, as determined by X-ray diffraction, of 1À73 to 5À00. The tenacity is at least 4À4 g./de., the elongation is 11 to 40%, the toughness at least 21À5 and the melting point at least 275‹ C. The tenacity retention on treatment for 6 hours at 150‹ C. with wet heat is at least 60% and the dye exhaustion with a disperse dye is at least 40%. The fibre is produced by melt spinning the polyester through a spinning orifice having a crosssectional area of 0À049 to 3À14 mm.<SP>2</SP> at a temperature defined by the equations where T is the spinning temperature (‹ C.), [#] is the intrinsic viscosity and A is the crosssectional area (mm.<SP>2</SP>) of each spinning orifice. The draft ratio is 50 to 20,000 and is defined by the equation where W is the take-up speed and D the draft ratio. The filaments may be woven, knitted or felted to form a fibrous cloth or sleeve and heattreated (allowing not more than 15% shrinkage using a tenter) at 205‹ C. to melting point, such that where T=temperature, t=time. The applications are in carpets, tyre reinforcements, filters, V-belts, flat belts, conveyer belts, hoses, vehicle hoods, overshoes, stuffing materials, and electrical and thermal insulators. The cloth may be laminated with organic films, paper, glass, asbestos or mica. Varnish, anti-oxidant or fire retarding agents may be incorporated. The varnish may be of the alkyl, polyurethane, epoxy, acrylonitrile, silicone or heterocyclic type. The naphthalate polyester may be copolymerized with compounds having one or more ester forming functional group, which may be functional derivatives of phosphonic, phosphonous, phosphoric or phosphorous acid, or halogenated alcohols.
