Abstract
1410994 Automatic control of speed UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 25 July 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 36813/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] A speed-control circuit for use with a serieswound commutator motor M comprises a diode D7 for shunting the motor and a full-wave rectifier FWR2 for energizing the motor through a thyristor SCR 1 and means such as R15 for deriving a control signal proportional to the amplitude of the motor current as SCR 1 shuts off at the end of each half cycle and means for causing the control signal to vary the triggering angle of said thyristor SCR1 in a sense to advance the triggering angle as the current increases. As described, transistor VT1 is turned off at the end of each half cycle from a full-wave rectifier FWR1, turning on VT3 which allows then a diode D5 to clamp the voltage across capacitor C2 to the voltage across capacitor C3 which is proportional to the motor current at the time SCR 1 shuts off. VT 1 becomes turned on at the beginning of the next half cycle, turning off VT3 and allowing capacitor C2 to charge exponentially via R9 until the emitter of VT2 reaches the voltage set in on the speed-adjusting potentiometer RV2 when VT2 becomes conducting, so as to trigger SCR 1 via an emitter follower VT4. The motor M may be connected via 100 yards of three-core cable TCC having self-capacitance C s and including a reversing switch (not shown). Zener diodes D8, D10 expedite the turn off of SCR1. FWR1 may be omitted if diode D2 is connected to FWR2 via appropriate dropping resistors.
