Abstract
1410898 Agitating, aerating and circulating liquids UNION CARBIDE CORP 16 Feb 1973 7623/73 Heading B1C [Also in Division C7] Molten metal may be refined in a batch or continuous process using a refining apparatus Fig 3, in which molten metal enters through inlet port 40 and is subjected to the injection of gas via means 35 shown in Fig 1 which comprises a vaned rotor 1 attached to shaft 3, and stationary sleeve 4 and vaned stator 5; gas flows through the passageway between the inner surfaces of the sleeve and stator and the outer surface of the shaft and is discharged in bubble form into the melt radially outwards and downwards. The shaft 3 may contain an internal axial passageway communicating with the passageway between the outer surface of the shaft and the inner surface of the stator and sleeve through which gas may also be passed. The spent inert gas may be collected in head space 43 and discharged by damper 49 and the non-metallic impurities which collect on the metal surface may be removed by skimming. The refined metal leaves the apparatus through discharge port 44 and exit trough 47 which may contain graphite or refractory chip filtering medium. The rotor and stator may be made of graphite and the refining apparatus may contain a plurality of refining zones each of which is provided with a gas injection means of the type shown in Fig 1.
