Abstract

1410649 Solid fuel product USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 20 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 48508/72 Heading C5E A solid fuel product for reducing metal ores is produced by mixing together under substantially atmospheric pressure a finely divided solid carbonaceous material having a maximum particle size of about “ inch and a hydrocarbon material until particles of substantially uniform composition having a normal size distribution within the range of about # inch to 3 inches are obtained by agglomeration of the mixture; the hydrocarbon material being or becoming liquid during the mixing and having a minimum normal boiling point above 250‹ F., a viscosity of 10 poise or less at temperatures up to 750‹ F., a softening point (R+B) of 25-150‹ C., a Conradson Coke Value of 18-60 weight per cent, quinoline insolubles of 4-12 weight per cent, benzene insolubles of 10-20 weight per cent, C/H ratio of 1À0-2À0, the hydrocarbon material about 10 to 60% by weight of the total material, setting the particles to maintain their shape, e.g. by heating to 212‹ to 1000‹ F., and carbonizing the particles by heating at a temperature of 1200-2300‹ F. The mixing may be performed by first forming a layer of the carbonaceous material and adding thereto the hydrocarbon material and then causing relative movement between the materials, e.g. under pelletization or ball-milling conditions. The material may have a crushing strength of at least 340 kg. measured on 1À9 Î 3À18 cm. particles and may be heated with a metal ore, e.g. crude iron ore or iron ore in pellet form, to yield a metal.
