1410469 Particulate solids JOHN KERR & CO (MANCHESTER) Ltd 3 Nov 1972 [4 Nov 1971] 51233/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division A5] A dry powder fire extinguisher material is prepared by separating staple fire extinguishing material of spherical or pseudo spherical particles into a fine fraction and a coarse fraction, subjecting the coarse fraction to impact attrition to reduce the size of the particles and thereafter adding the treated coarse fraction to the fine fraction so that the re-combined fractions have a median particle size not exceeding 30 microns. Suitable stable fire extinguishing materials are sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, potassium sulphate, potassium chloride and ammonium phosphate. Ammonium sulphate, boric acid or a salt thereof, ammonium bicarbonate, sodium phosphate, an alkali metal halide other than potassium chloride, polymeric material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, a polysaccharide, a protein, a protein derivative, an oxygen compound of silicon, urea, or a derivative of urea may also be added. Suitable methods of impact attrition are grinding and ball milling.
