1410373 Measuring displacement electrically WILDT MELLOR BROMLEY Ltd 7 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6392/72 Heading G1N [Also in Division G3] A scanning device for use in preparing programme data for an automatically controlled circular knitting machine, see Division G2-G3 comprises potentiometers POT 1, POT 2 mounted, as shown, on a universal joint 63. The potentiometers are retained on a cross-arm 68 and their resistance value is dependent on the relative position of the cross-arm with respect to a fork member 64, fixedly secured to a support member, not shown, and to a fork member 65 moved by a telescopic pointer 11 which is manually positioned at discrete elements of a pattern area 1a. On completion of the area 1a the scanning device is transferred to a contiguous arc of the pattern such as 1b 2a. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the arm and universal joint are inverted below the pattern surface and a U-shaped member employed to transfer scanned movements. The potentiometers are used to provide analogue voltages representative of the position of the arm or are included in a bridge network whereby the output signals would be in the form of analogue currents.
