1409541 Sound insulation SKF (UK) Ltd 5 July 1973 [17 July 1972 23 Oct 1972] 33291/72 and 48743/72 Headings F2P and F2X [Also in Division B3] The noise emitted by a machine tool, e.g. a multi-spindle automatic lathe, having feed stock rotating within a stock-carrying tube is reduced by surrounding the outside of the stock-carrying tube by a closely fitting sheath of plastics material. The sheath is split longitudinally into two part-cylindrical segments, such as the segment 5 shown in Fig. 2 which is formed as an extrusion out of rigid p.v.c. Each of the segments 5 is formed with a rebate 6 in the external face of one axially extending edge and a rebate 7 in the internal face of the other axially extending edge. The provision of the rebates 6, 7 forms tongues 8, 9 along the axially extending edges such that when two of the segments 5 are fitted together the tongue 9 of one segment fits in and fills the rebate 6 of the other segment, and similarly the tongue 8 fits in and fills the rebate 7. Because the segments 5 extend angularly for more than 180 degrees around the stock-carrying tube, they have to be snapped into position over the tube and this is possible because of the resilience of the plastics material of which the segments are made. In the alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 4, each segment 10 has its axially extending edges castellated in the form of projections 11 separated by spaces 12. Thus two identical segments, one of which is arranged the opposite way round from the other, can be fitted together with the projections 11 of one segment entering the spaces 12 of the other segment. The segments 10 are formed as individual mouldings out of glass fibre-reinforced polyester resin. As with the first embodiment, the segments 10 extend angularly for more than 180 degrees and therefore have to be snapped over the stock-carrying tube.
