Abstract

1409051 Hip-joint prosthesis NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 20 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 44709/71 Heading A5R A hip-joint prosthesis comprises an acetabular device, Figure 1, and a femoral device, Figure 5. The acetabular device consists of a cup having an outer surface 3 of substantially symmetrical form relative to axis 5 and an inner surface 2 having a substantially symmetrical form relative to axis 4. The two axes are mutually angled and the inner surface 2 is eccentrically disposed relative to the outer surface 3 providing a greater wall thickness in the closed end region of the cup than in the rim region. The outer surface 3 of the cup has annular grooves 6 disposed in the surface in radial planes relative to the axis 5 and an annular ring 11, engaged in a groove around the cup outer surface, which is opaque to X- rays. The femoral device consists of a spherical head-shaped part 23 joined by a necked part 22 to the wider end of an elongate stem 21. The stem has a polygonal cross-section and is tapered to produce a reduction in its lateral dimensions in at least two intersecting longitudinal planes. The stem may be of rectangular cross section at its larger end and square at its smaller end with corners chamfered along a major portion of the stem to a progressively greater depth towards the neck portion thereof. In order to aid correct vertical positioning of the femoral device in the femur a series of marks 25 are provided. These marks correspond to a series of holes in a second femoral device which is used as a test piece. The test piece is inserted into the femur to the correct position and the depth of insertion noted by the holes. The actual device can then be cemented into the correct position immediately. A spacer device Fig 10 is fitted and retained on the stem 21 when cementing into the femur to ensure a layer of cement all round the stem and comprises a base 30 with at least three spring members 31 equally spaced extending from the base. The base is adapted to fit onto the stem 21 of the femoral device but to slide only part way up the stem. A tool for aiding in insertion of the devices is disclosed illustrated in Fig 11 (not shown).
