Abstract

1409045 Coalescing KNITMESH LTD G A DAVIES and G V JEFFREYS 8 Sept 1972 [16 July 1971] 33444/71 Headings B1D and BIT Liquid droplets of more than 100 microns dia. in a gas stream or in a stream of another liquid (e.g. kerosene-water mixture) are coalesced by passage through or over an element which comprises a mixture of two materials with different surface energy levels. In the case of a liquid-liquid mixture each material is preferentially wetted by a respective liquid, and this is stated to allow higher flow rates with effective coalescing than does a single material and also permits equally effective coalescing whichever liquid is the dispersed phase. An element may be made of one material and have areas of the other material applied thereto by spraying, painting or printing or applied as a uniform layer parts of which are then removed by scratching or etching. Another element comprises one or more layers of woven or knitted fabric whose threads may be of different materials, or each thread may comprise a plurality of strands of different materials. Alternatively an element may comprise a porous mass of tubes, rings, plates or saddles, of different materials or each comprising two materials. Exemplified mixtures of materials are stainless steel with nylon, P.T.F.E., polyethylene or polypropylene in a ratio by length of from 3:1 to 1:3. Metals, metal oxides, ceramics and glass are suitable to mix with synthetic polymers. Coalescing by contacting the fluid with the mixture of materials precedes a settling separation stage.
