Abstract

1408554 Propellants USA NAVY SECRETARY OF 1 Sept 1966 39177/66 Heading C1D A propellant composition comprises nitrocellulose, a solid oxidizer, a metal fuel, and a liquid organic nitrate plasticizer, and the nitrocellulose is reacted with a cross-linking agent containing at least two isocyanate groups and a cross-linking catalyst, in order to increase the tensile strength and modulus of the propellant and to decrease its elongation. The solid oxidizer may be ammonium perchlorate, nitroguanidine, HMX, or RDX. The metal fuel used is aluminium; carboranylmethyl acrylate may be added as a liquid fuel. Organic nitrate plasticizers referred to are the explosive compounds nitroglycerine, diethylene glycol dinitrate, triethylene glycol dinitrate, and trimethylol methane trinitrate; a non-explosive ester, ketone, nitrile, or nitro compound is mixed with the explosive compound. The preferred cross-linking agent is 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, but other isocyanates are referred to. The cross-linking catalyst may be ferric acetylacetonate, lead 2-ethyl hexoate, or dibutyl tin diacetate. Stabilizers which may be added are 2-nitrodiphenylamine, ethyl centralite, and resorcinol diacetate. In examples, other ingredients not referred to specifically above are triacetin, di-n-propyl adipate, ferric oxide, calcium phosphate, dioctyl phthalate, and diallyl phthalate. Methods of manufacture of the composition are as follows: (a) the ingredients, except the cross-linking agent, are mixed with methylene chloride, most of which is removed by heating under reduced pressure, the cross-linking agent is added, and the product cured by heat; (b) all the components are stirred together under reduced pressure and cured by heat; (c) solid components are added to a solution of the soluble ingredients in the organic nitrate plasticizer under reduced pressure.
