Abstract

1408293 Reducing the starch content of tobacco BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 22 May 1973 [20 June 1972] 28786/72 Heading A2C An aqueous slurry or dispersion of dried, uncured and unfermented tobacco is treated at 20-90‹C with at least one amylolytic enzyme capable of converting the starch contained therein to sugar. The enzymatic source may be bacterial or fungal e.g. α-amylase, amylase, amyloglucosidase, actinomycetes, bacillus polyemyexa, Rhizopus or Streptomyces. The enzyme or its precursor may be added directly to the aqueous dispersion or vice versa. Typical concentrations are 0.001-0.02g. of enzyme per g of dry tobacco. Comparative examples disclose the rate of conversion of starch to sugar.
