Abstract

1408139 Measuring wind speed electrically SPERRY RAND Ltd 16 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 53483/71 Headings G1N and G1R A wind sensor comprises a wind-exposed member 1, in the form of a perforated, hollow sphere, carried by a spindle 2 to which is attached an armature 5 of an inductive pick-off device 6 the spindle being supported by a flexible part 4 of reduced diameter forming a single cantilever spring, in use the spring 4 deflecting in response to the wind acting on the sphere whereby an output voltage of amplitude proportional to wind velocity and of polarity indicative of wind direction along a predetermined axis is produced. In an alternative embodiment Figs. 5-8 (not shown) the inductive pick-off device comprises two pairs of stators whereby armature deflection is sensed along each of a pair of orthogonal axes. An electromagnetic self-test device 12, is provided to produce a given deflection of the armature.
