Abstract
1408142 Lactone-modified polyesters LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Feb 1973 [9 Dec 1971] 5490/73 Divided out of 1408141 Heading C3R A modified polyester is prepared by reacting an organic polyol containing three or more hydroxyl groups with a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride to give a polyester containing hydroxyl side groups and then modifying the polyester by reacting at least some of the hydroxyl side groups with a lactone of the formula in which X is (CR 2 ) n , where n is 4 to 7 and R is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, chlorine or bromine, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in X does not exceed 12 and that X contains no more than 2 hydrogen atoms. The modified polyester may be crosslinked with an amino resin or a polyisocyanate. The examples describe preparing a polyester from phthalic anhydride and either glycerol or trimethylol propane, optionally with ethylene glycol, modifying the polyester by reaction with caprolactone and cross-linking the modified polyester containing titanium dioxide with hexamethoxymethyl melamine or diphenyl methane di-isocyanate. The final composition may be coated on glass, steel or aluminium.
