Abstract

1407019 Hydrocarbon reformation INTERNATIONAL MATERIALS CORP 8 Dec 1972 56905/72 Heading C5E Liquid and solid hydrocarbons, e.g. gasoline, garbage and sewage, are thermally decomposed to generate hydrogen and carbon monoxide by intermittently introducing hydrocarbon into a zone free from catalyst which zone is maintained at a sufficiently elevated temperature to effect non-catalytic decomposition of the hydrocarbon to coke and hydrogen, either simultaneously or subsequently introducing superheated steam under the corresponding autogenous pressure into the zone, maintaining a sufficient temperature in the zone during periods when there is no introduction of hydrocarbon for reaction between liberated coke and superheated steam to proceed to substantial completion thus avoiding accumulation of coke deposits within the zone. Two elongated heated reaction zones are employed into one end of each of which hydrocarbon is alternately introduced with superheated steam the arrangement being such that hydrocarbon is introduced into one of the zones during at least part of the time when steam is introduced into the other zone, the zones being heated to a temperature above 950‹ C. Alternatively, a single elongated reaction zone is employed into one end of which steam is continuously injected and hydrocarbon fuel is intermittently injected, the zone being heated at least during the injection of hydrocarbon fuel to a temperature above 950‹ C. The effluent from the elongated reaction zone or zones is conducted to a further elongated zone free from catalyst maintained at a lower temperature in which the carbon monoxide present in the effluent is oxidized by water vapour present therein to carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The temperature in the zone or zones maintained at a lower temperature is about 430‹ C. Steam and hydrocarbon are introduced in a steam to carbon molar ratio of substantially 2 : 1. The carbon monoxide generated may be subjected to a shift reaction. Air or oxygen may be injected into the hydrocarbon in the reaction zone to expedite oxidation of the hydrocarbon and the coke.
