Abstract

1406859 Reclaiming waterlogged cable WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 15 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 58020/72 Heading H2C Liquid is purged from the interior voids of an elongate core member, e.g. a multi-pair sheathed plastics insulated telephone cable in which the voids are between the interstices of the pairs, by introducing a purging agent into the member, which purging agent when introduced into the member has an initial viscosity of less than 100 c.p.s. at 35‹ to 90‹ F. and comprises a solvent containing a first component comprising an isocyanate prepolymer and a second component comprising a polyol, the solvent also containing a catalyst for catalysing a cross-linking gelling reaction between the solvent and the components to form a cross-linked network which resists further entry of the liquid into the member. The first component is preferably a prepolymer derived from toluene diisocyanate or diphenylmethane diisocyanate and castor oil or a hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene and the second component is preferably a hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene. A prepurgant may be pumped into the voids prior to the components of the purging agent. The prepurgant must be miscible with the liquid in the voids and the components and may be a low molecular weight polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol or methyl ethyl ketone. The process is particularly useful in permanently purging water which has seeped into telephone cables.
