Abstract
1406704 Making emission control devices; welding by pressure and fusion G K N SANKEY Ltd 22 May 1973 [24 Feb 1972] 8486/72 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Division B1] A method of making an emission control device of the type comprising a metallic container in which is mounted a porous core 11 having a catalyst disposed in the pores of the core, the container being formed from drawn sheet metal parts 11, 12 and having peripheral flanges 15, 19, comprises applying sealing means 20 to the core periphery so as to overlie edge portions thereof, placing the core and sealing means in one of the parts, applying the other part to the one part and welding their peripheral flanges together. The material of the sealing means fills the space between the core 11 and the central portions 14 of the parts 12, 13 and engages shoulders 18 thereby preventing movement along the portions 14. Prior to welding shields are inserted into tapered portions 16 of the parts 12, 13 to prevent welding gases entering the pores of the core. The flanges 15, 19 are held together by spot welding and then they are seam welded together by resistance welding and then by an argon arc process. After welding the shields are removed and the device tested for leakage by air pressure. The shields may be of heat resistant elastomeric material. The inlet to the device may be provided with a deflector to diffuse the exhaust gases over the whole area of the core and an element (not shown) to sense over heating is preferably included to turn off the engine or divert the exhaust gases. Two devices may be mounted in tandem, Fig. 5 (not shown), or the central portion may contain two cores separated axially, Fig. 6 (not shown). Where two cores are provided, the first removes the oxides and nitrogen while the second removes unburned hydrocarbons and converts carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. An air bleed (33), Fig. 6, for secondary air is provided between the cores. A heat shield (35), Fig. 7 (not shown), may also be secured to the device. The parts 12, 13 are made from heat resistant steel or nickel alloys.
