Abstract
1406690 Rotary filter with drying means COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) LTD 22 Dec 1972 59319/72 Heading BID [Also in Division F4] Coal slurry is picked up from a bath on an inward flow rotary filter drum or array of filter discs and carried thereon through a steam hood 4 to dry the coal, and the temperature of filtrate drawn out of the drum or discs above the slurry level is monitored and controls the steam supply to avoid wastage. The drum or discs are divided internally into sectors which are successively connected through zones 40-43 of valve 39 and flexible pipes 44, 46 with suction source 45 (zones 40, 41), atmosphere (zone 43) and reverse flow air supply (zone 42). Mercury in steel thermometer 62 extends into zone 41 of the valve, where filtrate drawn from sectors above the slurry level is collected, and is connected to temperature recorder 65 which controls main steam valve 27 via pneumatic signal line 66. The signal is cut by valve 67 if pressure monitor 72 detects a loss of suction in line 45, thus closing valve 27 if the filter drum/discs or coal coating thereon break. Meter 11 monitors the steam flow and cuts the supply to individual axially spaced sectors of the hood if the total flow is insufficient to dry all the coal layer. The reverse flow air supply to zone 42 of valve 39 is through pneumatically controlled valve (55), which is opened briefly, as each sector of the drum/discs moves wholly into the blow-off zone, by a pneumatic valve (47) controlled by a rotary disc (49) geared to the drum/discs. This action and scraper blade (61) removes the dried coal which falls onto a belt (59) whence it is removed by a reciprocating blade (60) (Fig 1 not shown). The flexible pipes (44, 46, 56) allow some angular adjustment of valve 39 to vary the positions of zones 40-43. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1096164.
