Abstract

1406400 Paper MONSANTO CO 27 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972 (2)] 59774/73 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] There is incorporated into paper a cationic resin obtained by reacting (A) an adduct of (1) a dihaloalkane represented by the formula wherein X represents chloro, bromo, or ido, R is hydrogen, hydroxy or alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and n is 0 or 1, and (2) a polyalkylenepolyamide represented by the formula wherein m is an integer of from 4 to 15 and p is 0 or 1, in a mole ratio of from 0.5:1 to 0.95:1, with (B) epichlorohydrin, epibromohydrin or epiiodohydrin, in a mole ratio of from 1.25 to 2.5 moles of epihalohydrin per mole of amine group in the adduct. The product is water-soluble and may be applied to or incorporated in, paper, as a solution, dried and cured to an insoluble material. Paper so treated has improved wet strength. In examples adducts are formed from 1, 2-dichloroethane, 1, 2-dibrornoethane, 1, 2-diiodoethane, 1, 3-dichloro-2-methyl propane, 1, 3-diiodo-2-butyl propane and 1, 3-dichloro-2-isobutyl propane with 1, 6-hexamethylene-diamine, 1, 5-pentamethylenediamine, 1, 7-heptamethylenediamine, 1, 2-dodecamethylenediamine, bisheptamethylenetriamine and bistetradecamethylenetriamine and the adducts are reacted with epichlorhydrin, epibromohydrin and epiiodohydrin; the products are mixed with pulp which is then formed into paper.
