Abstract

1405664 Hydrocracking SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSGHAPPIJ NV 22 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 43950/72 Heading C5E In a hydrocracking process, when a fresh charge of amorphouscatalyst is first put on stream, the nitrogen content of the feed is kept between 10 and 75 parts per million until the nitrogen content of the catalyst, and therefore the temperature needed to maintain a given conversion, reach equilibrium; it is then reduced to less than 5 p.p.m. for the-rest of the run. If the feed has a nitrogen content less than 5 p.p.m., this can be brought up to 10-75 by adding ammonia, methylamine, aniline or pyridine. Alternatively, if the process, of the invention is the second step of a two-stage process, the changes in nitrogen content can be obtained by changing the severity, e.g. the temperature, of the first step. In the example, a middle-eastern flash distillate with a nitrogen content of 600 p.p.m. is hydrocracked in two stages. First stage catalysts are of. nickel sulphide; tungsten sulphide and fluorine on alumina and of nickel sulphide, molybdenum sulphide and florine on alumina. The temperature in the first stage is chosen to give an effluent of the right nitrogen content. The catalyst in the. second stage is of nickel sulphide, tungsten sulphide and fluorine on silica-alumina. The effluents of both stages are mixed and fractionated into a C 1 and C 2 fraction, a C 3 and C 4 fraction, a light gasoline (to 65‹ C.), two naphtha fractions (65-120‹ C. and 120-185‹ C.) and a residual fraction used as feed to the second stage.
