Abstract
1405348 Explosive compositions ICI UNITED STATES Inc 3 Oct 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 46162/73 Heading C1D A water-in-oil emulsion explosive composition comprises by weight 1-10% of a waterimmiscible carbonaceous fuel; 55-87% of an oxidizer comprising ammonium nitrate, another inorganic nitrate, an organic amine oxidizing salt, and an inorganic chlorate or perchlorate; 10-25% of water; 0À5-2% of a water-in-oil emulsifier; sufficient occluded gas or gasentrapping material to give the composition a density of 0À8 to 1À4 gms./c.c.; and 0À4-4% of strontium ion in the form of a water-soluble strontium salt to act as a detonation catalyst sensitizer. The composition does not need a booster charge, being cap-sensitive in diameters as low as one inch. Many suitable ingredients are listed. Part of the water may be replaced by ethylene glycol, methanol, ethanol, or propanol. The occluded gas may be air or other specified gases. Other optional ingredients include gelling agents and auxiliary fuels, e.g. Al or Mg. In examples, the ingredients used are microcrystalline wax, refined mineral oil, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, ethylene diamine dinitrate, ammonium perchlorate, sorbitan monooleate or mono- and di-glycerides of fatty acids, water, guar gum, sulphur, hollow glass spheres, and strontium nitrate, chloride, acetate, or hydroxide. Reference is made to Specifications 1,216,229, 1,262,973 and 1,329,512.
