Abstract

1404541 Recording data; avoiding defects INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 May 1973 [7 June 1972] 23607/73 Headings G4A and G5R Data is recorded serially in tracks along a record medium, e.g. magnetic disc, each track having a pre-recorded indication of whether it contains a defect rendering a portion of the track unusable and of the distance of the defect from a fixed reference point, and the recording system includes control means responsive to the pre-recorded defect indication to record data in such a way as to avoid defects. Each track of a magnetic disc includes a pre-recorded field indicating whether the track contains a defect and the distance of such a defect from an index mark denoting the start of the track. The data is recorded in record blocks separated by gaps, each block including a control field, and one or more further fields, including data fields, separated by gaps. The control field includes an indication of the lengths of various parts of the block together with address information and an indication of the distance from the block to the defect (if present), the last value being recalculated and recorded as each new block is recorded. A check is made for each block as to whether the defect will affect its recording by comparing the calculated defect distance and the block length. If a block would be affected a check is made to determine whether the defect will be wholly contained within an inter-field gap, whether the defect can be avoided by extending one of the gaps by a fixed length along the track, or whether it will be necessary to split one of the fields and introduce a gap of the fixed length. If the defect lies within a gap no action is taken and the block is recorded normally, otherwise the disc is carried through a complete revolution and the control field is re-recorded to indicate what action is being taken and the block is recorded appropriately. The control field is used to control the corrct read-out of shifted and split fields.
