Abstract

1403584 Encapsulated antibiotics BEECHAM GROUP LTD 16 May 1973 [19 May 1972] 23576/72 Heading A5B A powder useful in the formulation of pharmaceutical preparations consists essentially of "microcapsules" having an average diameter of 100Á to 300u, at least 90% of the microcapsules having diameters in the range 75u to 450Á and which comprises 98% to 99.9% of a #-lactam antibiotic coated by 0.17 to 2% of polyvinylpyrrolidone. The term "microcapsule" means a particle composed of an outer, generally porous shell of PVP as coating agent with an inner core of fine particles. They may be made by spray-drying a slurry of antibiotic in a solution of PVP in a suitable solvent. Many conventional solid and liquid formulations comprising the microcapsules are mentioned. Specified antibiotics include; ampicillin, amoxicillin, isoxazolylpenicillin, salts and esters thereof and esters of ampicillin and carbenicillin.
