Abstract

1403397 Photo-electric size monitoring T PLANKE 14 Dec 1972 [14 Dec 1971] 57783/72 Heading G1A [Also in Divisions H1 and G4] In an apparatus for classifying and counting articles, such as empty bottles returned for refund of deposit, the articles are conveyed past a photoelectric detector 26 upon which is formed a shadow of the articles, the signals produced by the detector due to the moving shadows being analyzed to find the number of articles of each size that have passed and this information being printed out. The detector 26 comprises a plurality of pairs of photo-transistors Fig.4 (not shown). The members of each pair are closely associated and are connected to a circuit Fig.3 (not shown) which issues a signal to be counted only if one member of the pair is illuminated and the other is in shadow. Each pair of photo-transistors is assembled in a permanent magnet ring (25) which provides for attachment to a metal panel but permits individual pairs to be moved around according to the kinds of bottles to be counted.
