Abstract
1403359 Magnetic enzymes NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 Aug 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 40297/71 Headings C3H and C3F Enzymic reactions are carried out using enzymes attached to a solid ferromagnetic support whereby separation of the enzymes from the reaction medium during or after the reaction may be effected by applying a magnetic field. The particles may, for example, be contained magnetically within or reacted in the form of a fluidized bed. The support may be particles of 10-100 microns size, rings, rods or cylinders. Ferromagnetic materials include iron, iron oxide, steel and strontium ferrite. The enzyme may be attached to the ferromagnetic material directly through a specified silane compound or on to a coating film of cellulose, nylon or polyurethane. According to the Examples: (1) chymotrypsin is bound to nickelplated iron beads (30-80 mesh) by the use of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane; (2) chymotrypsin or #-galactosidase are bound to particles of iron oxide through the same silane compound; and (3) chymotrypsin or #-galactosidase are bound to particles of magnetic cellulose produced by extruding a viscous slurry of α- cellulose containing iron oxide particles and drying and grinding the resulting thread. The enzyme penicillin amidase is also particularly mentioned.
